The effect of quinidine and procainamide on the neuromuscular blocking action of suxamethonium.

چکیده
Previous workers have shown that under certain clinical and experimental conditions, quinidine potentiates the neuromuscular blocking action of suxamethonium. This effect of quinidine has been demonstrated experimentally in a nerve-musde preparation in vivo while another antifibrillatory drug, procainamide, has also been shown to potentiate suxamethonium. Possible explanations of these drug interactions are discussed. Since quinidine is known to cause respiratory paralysis in man when administered intravenously during the recovery phase from suxamethonium block, it is suggested that procainamide may produce similar effects in this situation.

Interactions of diisopropyl phenol (ICI 35868) with suxamethonium, vecuronium and pancuronium in vitro.
In vitro studies were performed using the rat phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparation to investigate possible interactions between diisopropyl phenol and its solvent, cremophor, with three neuromuscular blocking drugs. Cumulative concentration curves were constructed for the neuromuscular blockers and linear regression analyses performed. Differences in the calculated effective concentration to...
متن کاملInteractions between suxamethonium and non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drugs.
In anaesthetized cats, we have confirmed that previously injected suxamethonium potentiates non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drugs whereas, when injected during the block, suxamethonium antagonizes the paralysis. We have attempted to explain these interactions by studying the effects of suxamethonium on extracellularly recorded nerve ending waveforms that correspond to the ionic currents...
متن کاملDifferential effects of neuromuscular blocking agents on suxamethonium-induced fasciculations and myalgia.
The effect of pretreatment with suxamethonium, gallamine or pancuronium on suxamethonium-induced fasciculations and myalgia was studied in a controlled, randomized and double-blind clinical trial. Both fasciculations and myalgia were assessed on a four-point rating scale. There was no significant correlation between fasciculations and postoperative muscle pain at 24, 48 or 72 h, and pretreatmen...
متن کاملPretreatment with non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents and suxamethonium-induced increases in resting jaw tension in children.
We have studied the effect of prior administration of non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drugs on suxamethonium-induced increases in masseter muscle tension in 21 children aged 3-10 yr, anaesthetized with nitrous oxide and halothane using supramaximal stimulation of the ulnar nerve and the nerve to masseter. Resting tension and isometric force of contraction were measured in the adductor p...
متن کاملShortening of the Action Potential and Reduction of Pacemaker Activity by Lidocaine, Quinidine, and Procainamide in Sheep Cardiac Purkinje Fibers
The ionic mechanism underlying the shortening of the action potential and the reduction in pacemaker activity by lidocaine, quinidine, and procainamide in sheep cardiac Purkinje fibers was investigated using the two-microelectrode voltage clamp technique. In the presence of lidocaine (1.85 to 3.7 x 10"M), steady state currents were shifted outward over a broad range of potentials. In contrast, ...
